Zdravko Zovko, the successful handball trainer who will fill in the position as assistant coach of Győri Audi ETO KC starting from season 2018/2019 doesn’t really need to be introduced to handball audience thank to the successes during his career so far. But, it seems that a new adventure is waiting for him again…

One of the most experienced handball trainers of the world, Zdravko Zovko has joined the team of Győri Audi ETO KC as assistant coach besides Gábor Danyi – we have made a short interview with him about his decision to keep on his career with the green and white team.

What gave you motivation to work as assistant coach of Győri Audi ETO KC? Because we know you better in the first position working as head coach on the top of teams…

  • It is always special to talk about these two positions, being head coach or assistant coach. If we think of the practice in other sports like basketball or ice-hockey especially in the USA – there are generally young trainers working as head coaches and ruitinish experienced trainers in the position of assistant coaches. I think it is a good division of labour, because this way I will be able to share important information with Gábor from the background where I can recognize more important things. But back to the question, I didn’t hesitate when I got this opportunity – handball court, arena, trainings and matches are those thing from which I feel good, so I am very happy to be able to work for Győri Audi ETO KC.

Which one do you prefer – being an active sportsman or working as a trainer?

  • I really liked playing handball, I was a hard-working player and enjoyed it a lot, but of course it is fantastic in the other side as well, working as a coach. You have to make serious decisions and take the responsibility for them, so it is not easy at all but a beautiful job.

What is the difference between women and men teams through the eyes of a trainer?

  • I was lucky to have the opportunity to train women and men teams for years as well, but I think there isn’t any difference which could be seen as essential. It is handball anyway, even if it is maybe faster or more dinamic if it is played by men, but I guess, the Champions League final between Győri Audi ETO KC and Vardar Skopje last season has already reached the level of men matches by its tempo and struggle. One thing I have to mention in this comparison is, that the hard work, motivation and daily attitude of women players are exemplary without question.

How do you feel here in Győr?

  • I really enjoy working and living here in Győr – this is the place where everything is given for big successes, just to mention the infrastructure, organization and such kind of things, so we are also working on to reach our common goals.

We wish all the bests and big sport successes to Zdravko Zovko!
